As a bit of a fun post, I thought I would share some of my fictional favourite characters. Before I begin despite the picture below all these preferences are based on the book characters, not TV or movie interpretation and there are ****spoilers**** so that’s your warning. Also, just a quick reminder to say if you a reading this thank you for your dedication. If would like to receive this post and more right in your inbox please subscribe to my newsletter via my website, links will be at the bottom. Do not miss out.
Elizabeth Bennett – I am sure this one will surprise no one. Anyone who has read Austen would list Elizabeth Bennett as their favourite. She is confident in herself and fun to read about and of course, Elizabeth and Mr Darcy is a treasure well-known love story. I also love the line “What are men to rocks and mountains,” as a bit of a walker myself who loves the countryside, I naturally gravitate to any character who likes to walk in the open air and read. My next favourite of Austen’s characters is also an obvious choice of Marianne Dashwood, but can anyone name an Austen character they don’t love? Even the antagonists are great fun to read about.
Finnick Odiar – Finnick has to take the top spot for me from The Hunger Games though it was an incredibly tough decision with some many epic characters in these books. Yes, part of it is because he dies and I am not ok with it but I also just love his loyalty, to Annie, to Katniss, to Johanna the list goes on. He is funny and sexy yet sensitive and of course brave. I like the friendship that he and Katniss develop and would love to read more about him. His story would make a pretty good book, fingers crossed. My runner-up would be Peeta which tells you which team I am on but choosing between Peeta and Gale is another incredibly hard choice, I don’t envy Katniss except I do if you follow lol.
Hermione Granger – The brightest witch of her age and a part of the Golden trio Hermione is again something of an obvious favourite. Like her I am a bit of a know it all who can’t help answering any question. But I like that she is more than just a book lover and rule follower. She knows when to break rules and how to learn more than just what is in her beloved books. She stands up for herself and what is right. My runner-up is Ginny Weasley who is so strong and sassy in the books but book Harry is so sassy too.
Tyrion Lannister – In A Song of Ice and Fire when you follow so many character journeys there are naturally going to be some you enjoy more than others and I always love tuning in to the Tyrion chapters. Not only is his story one of the most surprising but it also really pulls on your emotions. He is so misunderstood by other characters. I love his sarcasm and he has some amazing lines. Long may he live though in this series that something of dangerous wish. My runner-up is Sansa Stark which I know a lot of people will disagree with but I think her character grows the most and to be fair to her what would you expect a thirteen-year-old girl to do, I think her reaction to her traumas is more believe and therefore her raising from is more commendable. There are two for the price of one.
Jo March – Josephine March from Little Women is part of the reason I became a writer. Growing up with sisters I really relate to this book and it is often my emotional feel-good read. Jo March is bold and not afraid to fight for what she wants. She has ambition and the fortitude to see it through. She is an amazing female role model. It also doesn’t hurt that she has a deep sense of family values and love. My next favourite would be Theodore Lawrence affectionally known as Teddy or Laurie. While I don’t believe he and Jo were meant to be I do love their friendship and I am glad that he did find his way into the March family.
Bartimaeus of Uruk – A lot of you might not recognise this character, he is a Djinn from Jonathan Stroud’s Bartimaeus series which is well worth a read if you a fan of magical realism. I love the comedy and gripping action in these books. Nathaniel’s and Bartimaeus's relationship, it would be inaccurate to call it friendship, and the way they trade off each is just such fun to read. But the crown has to go to Bartimaeus, though only one of his names because he has some of the best quotes and is the true leader of the series. Seriously I cannot recommend these books enough. My next favourite would be Kitty Jones as an excellent strong female lead.
James Holden – Who doesn’t love a crusader who is hell-bent on saving the world? Plus he is hot and romantic so that helps lol. James Holden faces death over and over and it only makes him a stronger better person. Sure he makes mistakes but they are the kind of mistakes that are ambiguous so some might argue he is infallible. The fact that he often proved right in the end and comes out as a champion makes him a hard character to resist. We all this sort of man in a crisis. In this series, my second favourite is a tie between Amos and Alex I like them both but for very different reasons.
Miss Jane Marple – I love old-fashioned detective stories and in this arena, Agatha Christie is the Queen. I am far more partial to Miss Marple than to Poirot. She is exactly what you would expect an interfering old woman to be, down to her knitting, and yet nothing like an interfering old woman. Her attention to detail and her understanding of human nature resonate in every book. She also has a respect for human life and love that is endearing despite her understanding of as she puts it wickedness. I love reading these cosy yet haunting mysteries. It is hard to choose a strong second lead from this collection but it would probably be Hastings.
Well while there are many more characters I would love to share with you I think eight is more than sufficient. Please do feel free to share some of your thoughts in return but please keep it friendly and fun. Hope to share more with you all soon.
